Walpole – MCI Cedar Junction, Location: South Walpole, Year opened: 1955, Security: Medium, maximum, Square footage: 687,485, What’s been done: It was expanded in 1991. The 1950s cells are 63 square feet, while cells in the modular addition are 80 square feet; 57 cells are double-bunked. In 2009, MCI Cedar Junction in Walpole, one of the most well-known maximum-security prisons in the state, was designated the official intake/reception center for men entering the prison system.
